How to Pray for a Bibleless People Group
Pray by Faith. “I will build my church.” Matt. 16:18
Pray for the Message
Pray that they may hear. “How can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard?” Rom. 10:14
Pray that they may believe. “But the message they heard was of no value to them, because those who heard did not combine it with faith.” Heb. 4:2
Pray that they may read or have read to them the translated Scriptures. “Blessed is the one who reads the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it read and take to heart what is written in it.” Rev. 1:3
Pray that the indigenous churches will use the translated Scriptures. “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.” 2 Tim. 3:16
Pray for the People
Pray by population. Each one is loved by God, whether one of many or one of few. “The Lord did not choose you because you were more numerous, for you were the fewest of all peoples. But it was because the Lord loved you.” Deut. 7:7–8
Pray by location. Each person is a resident in or displaced from a country with political and social conditions needing prayer. “I urge then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for … all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.” 1 Tim. 2:1–2
Pray by language. “There are all sorts of languages in the world, yet none of them is without meaning. If I do not grasp the meaning of what someone is saying, I am a foreigner to the speaker, and he is a foreigner to me.” 1 Cor. 14:10–11
Pray for ready hearts. Pray that God will prepare hearts with a readiness to receive Christ. “God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him.” Acts 17:27
Pray for unity among churches and missions. Pray for fruit produced by the Holy Spirit. Pray that God will break down any barriers among the churches and missions and bring unity through Christ’s work on the cross. “Some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill. The important thing is that Christ is preached.” Phil. 1:15, 18
Pray for the Language Workers
Pray for workers to be called and sent. Ask the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest field.” Matt. 9:38
Pray for initial contacts with the people. Pray God will remove any suspicions and provide friends who will help them find housing and make cross-cultural adjustments so that they are accepted by the people. “You did not treat me with contempt or scorn. Instead you welcomed me as if I were an angel of God.” Gal. 4:14
Pray for ongoing relationships and communication of the message. Pray for protection from false rumours and misunderstandings. Pray for involvement of the community until the translation program becomes their own. “Entirely on their own, they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service.” 2 Cor. 8:3–4
Pray for Support Workers
Pray for the children’s educators. Children’s education is a big challenge for families in cross-cultural ministry. Pray for teachers, student residence parents, school administrators, and librarians to support these families.
Pray for technical support people. Pray for community development specialists to express the practical love of Jesus. Pray for people to help provide safe, effective and economical transportation via land, air or water. Pray for computer people to share their expertise in an understandable way. Pray for telecommunications people to help provide email, radio, and satellite phone support. Pray for leaders to integrate biblical principles into the work as they keep up with our constantly changing world.
Pray for media support people. Pray for writers, artists, printing personnel, and electronic media specialists to help provide print and other media in this language and to communicate to pray-ers and givers about the needs and the progress among this bibleless people.
Pray for the Bibleless Peoples Prayer Project staff. Pray that God will provide long-term, skilled volunteers and that field members will help keep information up to date so prayers are well targeted.
Pray for operations support people. Pray for construction, maintenance and management people to develop and maintain translation support centres around the world. Pray for purchasing and shipping people to keep supplies flowing smoothly.
Pray for the Completion of the Task to the Glory of God.
Pray that everyone involved in this task will not grow weary in well doing. When you feel discouraged, find current stories that will encourage you to keep praying! “I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do.” John 17:4
