7/8/16 Humphrey & Lois Babbage
Encouraging progress recently with several people we’ve been working with. While Skype has limitations for counselling, it’s a heap better than just email. We expect to be relying on it quite a bit in the coming months. Please pray that our sensitivity will be well-tuned as necessary, to pick up the subtleties that are more obvious when face to face.
6/8/16 Channel of God’s blessing (Togo, Benin)
Pray that the local community and church leaders will actively support ACATBLI’s* work. Pray that ACATBLI will always be a channel of God’s blessing to the Ifè people and that the Ifè people will be a channel of blessing to the nations of Togo and Benin and beyond.
*ACATBLI – Association Chrétienne pour l’Alphabétisation et la Traduction de la Bible en Langue Ifè or Christian Association for literacy and Bible translation in the Ifè language.
5/8/16 A new generation of Bible translation facilitators (Canada)
In Canada, speakers of minority languages are gaining the skills to translate the Bible. They want to gain confidence in using those skills. Praise God for Bible translation facilitators who will assist in the technical and academic methods needed for Bible translation. Several individuals and teams are preparing to work together with First Nations translators. Pray that God will provide their needs and guide them as they serve.
4/8/16 Jesus speaks Kuna (Panama)
The “JESUS” film in the Kuna language premiered in July at a major theater in Panama City. Give thanks to God for the ministry of Cru and for the months of time the team devoted to recording the sound track in Kuna and lip-synching the audio. Throughout Panama, in the city, on the San Blas Islands and in mainland communities, Kuna people now see the life of Christ and hear the words of Jesus in their language. Pray for the impact of the film, and that many Kuna will come to Christ. Ask that the spiritual lives of Kuna believers will be enriched and strengthened.
3/8/16 Ethnomusicology event (Argentina)
A workshop for praise and worship music was held in the Toba-qom linguistic community of Chaco, Argentina 8-11 July. Twenty-five musicians and church leaders participated. They composed eight new songs in their language in various music styles, accompanied by traditional instruments. Give praise to God, and pray that these new songs will enrich the times of praise and worship for this community.
2/8/16 Draft translations (Equatorial Guinea)
Stephen and Nessie Levinsohn, UK, senior linguistic consultant – Equatorial Guinea is the only Spanish-speaking country in Africa, so needs consultants who speak Spanish to check draft translations into the local languages. Since January, Stephen Levinsohn* has been mentoring consultant-in-training Andrew Case and helping to check drafts in Benga and Kombe, using the Paratext computer program that allows consultants to ask questions that the teams then answer. The errors that emerge can be entertaining. ‘You have condemned correctly’ isn’t quite what Jesus meant by ‘you have judged correctly’ (Luke 7:43), for instance. Please pray for quality translations to result from the checking of the Psalms and Luke’s gospel.
(*Stephen and Nessie worked with the Inga people in Colombia from 1968 to 1995, hence the Spanish connection.)
1/8/16 Consultant checking (Nigeria)
Pray for the three weeks of consultant checking sessions that begin at NBTT (National Bible Translation Trust) in Jos, Nigeria on 1 August. Pray for God’s wisdom, strength and help for the translation teams and for the consultants and consultants-in-training that are working with the teams during these sessions.
